What Are the Pros and Cons of Taking Udemy Courses?

When considering enrolling in a Udemy course, you may wondering if it’s a good investment.

There are certainly pros and cons to enrolling in a Udemy course, and that is what we will quickly cover in this article.

Udemy courses are an affordable, effective, and convenient way to learn online, and come with a money back guarantee! However, a major disadvantage of Udemy courses is that they do not offer a traditional college degree upon completion.

The Pros:

1. Udemy Offers 130,000+ Courses

One of my favorite advantages of using Udemy for courses, is that they have a very large library of courses to choose from.

Additionally, every course that is available on Udemy has been reviewed and fact checked before ever becoming available for purchase.

You can find online courses all over the Internet, but by using Udemy you find the best courses all in one place.

Udemy’s marketplace allows you to search for different topics that you’re looking for, and even sort by student reviews.

2. There Are Plenty of Expert Instructors To Choose From

Courses on Udemy are available from all different types of experts.

One of the great things is that you will find courses from experts around the world, so you are not limited to a geographical location or a small pool of instructors.

When you compare this to traditional college education, colleges are limited to the professors that are in that area and teach at that university.

Udemy on the other hand allows you to choose from course is taught by a much larger pool of experts.

3. Taught By Real Experts Who Offer On-Going Support

The courses on Udemy are taught by experts in the field.

These experts have real life, hands-on, experience and often times this makes the value much higher in the courses that you enroll in.

When you compare this to traditional education, often times you will find professors teaching college courses strictly out of textbook curriculums.

With Udemy courses, the course material is hands-on and step-by-step, relating to the real world and tangible results.

This is why I prefer a Udemy courses over traditional college courses.

4. Many Courses Are Free of Cost

Another great advantage to Udemy courses, is that many of the courses on the Udemy library are free!

You really can’t beat this! With over 130,000 courses available, many of them have no charge at all to enroll.

On Udemy you can learn a ton of material, completely free of charge.

5. All Courses Are Very Affordable

Likely one of the biggest advantages of Udemy courses, is the low cost associated with enrolling.

The average course on Udemy, is between $10 and $30. Next line when you compare this cost of an online course, to the cost of a traditional college course, Udemy courses are much more affordable.

Additionally, as if it doesn’t get any better, all Udemy courses come with a 30 day money back guarantee!

If for some reason the Udemy course that you purchased does not fit what you were looking for, you can get your money back no questions asked within 30 days.

6. Udemy Provides Lifetime Access To All Courses

Sometimes you like to learn at your own pace, or something comes up in life where you have to postpone your learning.

With Udemy courses you have lifetime access to the learning material.

This allows you to learn at your own pace, and re-watch the course content as often as you would like.

Often times with traditional college courses, the course is taught on a strict timeline to cover a specific curriculum in a set amount of time.

With traditional college courses you are stuck to the professors pace, and you cannot rewatch the course content.

7. You Can Learn On Any Internet Device

One of my personal favorite advantages of you to me courses, is the ability to watch course content anywhere at anytime.

With Udemy courses being Internet-based, you can access the course material from a smart phone, a tablet, or a computer.

Additionally, some Udemy courses are even downloadable, which allows you to download the full course and watch the course content anytime you’d like even if you do not have Internet connection.

The Cons:

1. No College Degree

The main disadvantage to you to meet courses, is that they do not provide a college degree upon completion.

The main reason that students attend traditional education systems, is because they will receive a college degree upon completion.

Many employers require that you have a college degree in order to be considered for the position at their company.

However, some employers are moving away from this requirement, and rather hiring for skills.

Udemy courses do not count as college credit, and will not provide you with a college degree to put on your resume.

However you can still list you to make courses on your resume, and show that you have acquired skills from enrolling in the Udemy course.

It is definitely important to remember that showing your employer, or future employer, that you have enrolled in Udemy courses on your own willpower, will show them that you are determined and driven.

Being able to show that you enrolled in additional education, that was not required of you, shows employers that you are committed to progressing and providing the most value in your position at a company.

Udemy courses do provide a certificate at the end of completing the course, and this is something that you can print out similarly to a college diploma.

Udemy course certificates do not hold the same amount of credit as a college degree, however they are still recognizable certifications that absolutely belong on your resume.

The Bottom Line

There are certainly advantages and disadvantages of Udemy courses.

There is no doubt that Udemy courses will expand your knowledge, and teach you new skills that will help you in life and your career.

However at the same time you will not be receiving a college degree, or college credit, for completing Udemy courses.

Either way, Udemy courses are very affordable, teach you a lot of information, and come with a 30 day money back guarantee.

With all of these things in mind, Udemy courses are an excellent investment in yourself, and provide a large bang for your buck.
